What are the Oscars?

The Oscars, or to give them their official name, the Academy Awards are held every year to recognize actors and the film industry by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Oscars were first held on May 16th, 1929, at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood. Douglas Fairbanks and director William C. deMille were hosts.  Although there are other media awards such as the Golden Globe Awards, the Grammy Awards and the Emmy Awards, The Oscars remain one of the biggest and most popular ceremonies.

Why are They Called the Oscars?

Why the award became known as an Oscar is not entirely known. One theory is that Margaret Herrick, an Academy librarian said that that the trophy of
merit looked like her uncle Oscar. The first mention in print is credited to legendary Hollywood gossip columnist Sidney Skolsky, who used the name in his newspaper column. The Academy used the nickname officially in 1939. Herrick went on to become executive director of the awards.

What is an Oscar Statue?

The oscar statue, officially named the Academy Award of Merit is thought to be modelled on the ancient Egyptian god Ptah. In Memphite theology Ptah was an important figure - the master craftsman that created all living things and brought forth everything in existence. In Egyptian art Ptah is depicted as a tall man with a beard who wears a tightly fitting cap and ornate garments. He is always shown holding a sceptre, called a "was" which is a symbol of divine life, stability, and power. These powers combined are known as the Ankh. The sculpture has over the years has become one of the most important trophies for actors and actress who walk up that famous red carpet.

What are Oscar Statues Made of?

Oscar statues used at the Academy Awards are thirteen and a half inches tall, weigh eight pounds and are coated in 24-karat gold. The statues start life as brittania bars - an alloy of tin, copper and antimony - before being cast-molded and electro-plated. During the second world war, winners were awarded plaster statues, in recognition of the war effort. R.S. Owens & Co. has been manufacturing Oscar statues for the past twenty-five years. They cost about $500 each to make.

Oscar Winners

Film make Walt Disney has won the most Oscars. He was nominated for 64 and won 26. Katharine Hepburn is the actress with the most Oscars, winning four for best actress. The youngest winner of an Oscar was ten year old Tatum O'Neal, who won Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in Paper Moon. Marlon Brando controversially refused his Best Actor award for in 1973 for his part in the motion picture The Godfather. This was in protest against Hollywood’s treatment of Native Americans.

Award Speeches

The longest acceptance speech at the Oscars was made by Greer Garson in 1943. Awarded Best Actress for her performance in the movie Mrs Miniver, Garson hogged the limelight for five minutes and 15 seconds before bursting into tears.
